    Her Name Is Michelle video
I've decided to post more on youtube because it's been inspiring me to do more with my music and write, so here's a silly little video that Michelle and made for "Her Name Is Michelle":

    Happy Birthday on Monday, Michelle!

Dream Journal Entry- Snakes, Madonna, Runkel
I've been consistently having what appear to be stress-driven dreams. Here's what I remember from last night's dream:

    Part One:

Michelle and I were in a timeshare-style hotel with a kitchen. I came in through the door, walked past the kitchen, and I saw Michelle getting ready for bed. I looked over by the bed, and I saw what appeared to be a HUGE green spider, so I pointed it out to Michelle, and she said, "That's not a spider, that's a raveled-up snake!", and right as she said that, it straightened out and lunged for my arm from across the room. It then attacked me, biting me repeatedly until finally, someone (I don't remember who) burst into the room and got it into a headlock. I don't remember how this ended.

    Part Two:

I was in a record store. I was browsing when I saw two male employees behind the counter very excitedly flipping through a huge coffee table book. I walked up to the counter and saw that they were looking at Madonna's Sex book from 1993. I said, "That book has been out of print for years. One of them said, "Dude! New softcover edition!", and then I asked, "Is it in Spanish?"

    Part Three:

I was in the TV show Californication, and I was a reporter trying to get into Runkel's house to interview him. He would not let me in, and then whoever I was with pulled out a ridiculously huge key ring and said, "I have a key to his gate.". So we walked to the gate, and it was too huge and heavy to pull open once we got it unlocked.

    Writer's Block: Know by Heart

Have you ever thought you knew the words to a song and then been shocked to find out what the lyrics really were? What was the song? Did you like your version better?

Michael Jackson's lyric: "You're just another part of me"

    Sounded like, "You're just a ladda-quadda-mein"

Listen to it. That's what he says.

Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want
Appropriate song title for this time of year. I've been listening to this song on loop lately- especially the version in the museum scene of Ferris Bueller's Day Off by Dream Academy:

mp3: Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want

And then Michelle reminded me that this was originally by The Smiths:

mp3: Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want

Happy Holidays everyone! I hope you get what you want.

    Christine McVie
I've been obsessed with Christine McVie for the last three hours . . . she's very good at writing simple, infectious choruses, which is hard to do.

My feelings about the election results
Obama won! Yes Yes Yes! Michelle and I celebrated last night with a wine toast. It's a step in the right (or left, haha) direction. He's got a lot of work to do, but I'm hopeful that his administration will at least begin to turn things around.

As for Prop 102 in AZ, I can't say I am surprised, but I am angry! I'm even more angry about Prop 8 in California! For the people of California who have already been married, this right has been taken away from them, and their marriage is no longer valid in the state of California. This is WRONG!!! Imagine your marriage rights taken away by people who should have no control over your personal happiness. Gay and Lesbian couples in California don't have to imagine it- It's a reality for them.

The Gay and Lesbian citizens of the United States of America should have the same rights as everyone else, and Arizona and California just took a GIANT step backwards.

Maybe Obama will help change things in this arena as well. We can hope.

    Vote NO on Proposition 102
After having watched the debates, I saw this commercial on prime time TV. It upset me:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8BOrvxWPvI

Now, I'm not going to claim that I am one of the most political people in the world, but there are certain issues I care about, and I have been following this election fairly closely. Those of you who know me well know that I've always been a huge supporter of gay and lesbian rights. My friend Jess hit the nail on the head when she said, "I believe that all [Arizona] citizens should be guaranteed the same rights under our state Constitution. My gay and lesbian friends and neighbors should not be treated like second class citizens because they are different from me, and I will defend their right to equality tooth and nail."

So, if you live in Arizona, I strongly urge you to vote NO on proposition 102. If you aren't familiar with it, here it is:

Proposition 102, if approved by Arizona voters, will amend the Arizona Constitution by adding the following article related to marriage:

"Marriage - Only a union of one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in this state."
This is where Obama stands on the issue (and one of the several reasons I will be voting for him):

"When I am President of the United States, gays and lesbians will have somebody who will fight for equal rights for them, somebody who opposes Don't Ask, Don't Tell, somebody who's fought to make sure that gays and lesbians aren't discriminated against on the job or hospital visitation. Because they are our brothers and sisters, and I don't mind anyone knowing where I stand."
    — Barack Obama, November 16, 2007

This is where Tucson Mayor Bob Walkup stands on the issue:

"The fact that the Arizona legislature placed an anti-marriage amendment on the ballot again has been a great disappointment to both of us. This divisive and hurtful measure was already rejected by voters in 2006. In fact, it was rejected by a large majority of voters in Pima County. Why is the legislature wasting time and money on this when there are so many other pressing issues facing us? We urge you to vote NO, again."
--Bob Walkup, Mayor of the City of Tucson
    --Beth Walkup, Business Consultant, Tucson

So, Arizonans, it's time to grant the same rights to gays and lesbians that many others take for granted. When you go to the polls, please vote NO on proposition 102. If you're interested in reading more about this, visit the "Vote No On Prop 102" website: http://www.votenoprop102.com/web/home.php

The new Jenny Lewis album is great. Rian- this album is made for you. 70s snare, 70s soul strings. 70s soul singing. AND Elvis Costello and M Ward are on it!

One thing. If you're not an audiophile, buy the album on amazon and save a couple bucks. The cd packaging is disappointing. Not much there- a sleeve and 4 individual photo cards.

    It's gonna be a close call . . .
It's been awhile since I've done a real update on here, so here goes. I have a feeling this entry will be a bit more personal than usual.

I recently started working at the historic Fox Theatre in downtown Tucson. My sister works there, and she put in a good word for me. I owe Julie a lot. She's always kept me in mind for things, and I can't possibly imagine having a better sister. I think the world of her. I was first hired as a box office assistant, which basically means that I worked one day a week and most shows selling tickets and manning the phones. Not long after I started, Julie was promoted to Events Coordinator, and I was offered Julie's old job- Office Administrative Assistant. I happily accepted the position, and I've been doing that for about two weeks. I'll at least temporarily still be working the box office, so I'm juggling two positions. All-in-all, it's a great job. My co-workers are all super-cool, my hours are good, and the pay is great as well. They're struggling financially, so if you live in Tucson, please please please come see the shows and movies at The Fox. It's a beautiful theatre, and it would be a shame to see it close . . . and I want to keep my job! One thing that sort of looms over me is that since I have Julie's old position, I need to live up to the standard she set, and she set the bar pretty high. I'm sure that after I've been there awhile, this worry will fade, but it's been on my mind.

Some of you may not know that I also work as a Contemporary Music Director at a church here. I lead two bands and I select the music for two services. Angie, my supervisor (and pastor) is on maternity leave, so I've been taking on a little more than usual, but I think I've been doing ok with more responsibility- as long as I know that the extra hours are temporary. At first, I wasn't sure I would be right for the job mostly because I don't really listen to contemporary Christian music, but I did lead another church band before I went to Berklee, so I've had experience, and things have been going real well so far. The musicians are great people- very warm-hearted. The bands are happy with me. The pastors are happy with me. I can't really ask for much more. I've also become pretty good friends with Chad- the lead guitarist in the morning band. He's an interesting guy- a computer software developer- and a bitchin' lead player. He took me to a great Mexican restaurant on the south side last weekend. I had never been there, and it was pretty amazing.

My dad has been out of work for a few months. First, he was anxious about this, but he seems to be doing alright. He worked behind a desk for thirty years, and today, he took the exams to get into trucking school. My dad is going to be a trucker! Surreal, but if he will be happy doing it, then that's all that matters. He's back in Phoenix, which means I don't get to see him very often, but he's with my mom, and obviously, that's a good thing.

Michelle and I have been doing well. We look forward to the weekends together. She's been so supportive of all my work and musical decisions. Married life is good. She's been more into knitting than ever before. She's an active Ravelry user, and she's currently participating in an Afghan square swap- among other knitting projects. We've both been doing the Wii Fit, although she's much better at sticking with it than I am.

Izzy's 3rd birthday party is next week. It's "Finding Nemo"-themed. I can't believe he's going to be three!

I've been trying to write more music these days. It's slow-going, but I've been feeling inspired. Not listening to a whole lot besides Rilo Kiley, Ryan Adams, and Thomas Newman. And I think I love James Spader. We watched a movie the other night called Dream Lover. He was great in it. So-so movie, but great James Spader.

Sometimes I forget how much I love the band Phoenix . . . and then I listen to them, and they remind me of Jess, Rian, and Brad, my second year at Berklee, Lost In Translation and bliss.

    Dream Journal Entry Number One
The first thing I remember is riding shotgun in the car with my Uncle Glenn. We're driving next to a large, yellow utility-looking truck. Julie, Izzy and Michelle are in the truck. We pull up right next to each other so that I can jump into the truck Footloose style. I succeed in pulling this off, and we're headed to an undisclosed location.

The undisclosed location ends up being a city I've never seen before. It has a creepy feeling to it- foggy- humid- tall buildings covered in moss. We come up to some kind of a meeting area- like a big city square. The city has a feeling like it's abandoned. There are a few people gathered around these exotic-looking birds. They're colorful and have very sharp, long beaks that look almost like medical syringes. Julie, Izzy, and Michelle start playing with them and giving them food. I go to touch one of them and it starts stabbing me repeatedly with its beak. I try to get away but I can't. No one notices that it's attacking me. I manage to run behind a building. A bird follows me and stabs me in the hands. I try to get it to stop but it won't. It takes one last stab at my hand and the speed of the dream is slow motion. The stab is long and drawn-out, and I can't get its beak out of my hand. I get around to the other side of the building with the bird still attacking me and I see Michelle. I run to try to get to her but I can't get to her regardless of how fast I run.

I woke up with pain in my hands where the bird stabbed me. It took several seconds for the pain to go away.

I've never had a dream where I've woken up in pain like that before. Has anyone else?

There are certain movies I watch when I'm writing to sort of get that part of my brain going, and I've spent the afternoon writing for a play and watching The Myth of Fingerprints. Watching it again reaffirmed my love for it. It's one of my very favorites. If you haven't seen it, it's a great movie to watch in the winter . . . plus it has a great cast- Julianne Moore, Noah Wyle, Blythe Danner etc etc.

    Suzanne Vega and more
It's been forever since I've posted an entry, so I thought I'd take a few minutes to do so. I had a very nice Thanksgiving with my family in Phoenix. As I get older, I find that it's been easier to talk to the relatives on my mom's side of the family, so that's been good. This was Michelle's first Thanksgiving with all my relatives, and she did well.

Last Sunday, Michelle and I saw Suzanne Vega at the Rialto. It was my third time seeing her, and she was pretty amazing - by far the best show of hers I've seen. She's one of those artists who are a million times better live than on record, and that's saying a lot since her records are usually great.

In other news, I have taken to spending all my time in my underwear watching "Family Ties" over and over and over. When I'm not watching Family Ties, I'm in my underwear singing the theme song at the top of my lungs.

    Newly-released song on Myspace
    Hi all,

It's been awhile since I've done this, so I thought I'd let you know that my song, "Sleeping Pills", is newly available on my myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/davidragland

This recording is the result of some sessions I did with Rian Souleles and Bradley Mundell in 2005. Rian is engineering. Brad is playing guitar, and I'm playing piano and singing. I went back and listened to it and decided to do a quick mix of it so that it's at least out there for others to hear. I hope you enjoy it!

Regina Spektor Covers John Lennon's "Real Love"
I downloaded the album version of this on Itunes a few days ago, and I haven't been able to stop listening to it. One of the most beautiful recordings I've heard recently, and definitely one of the best John covers I've heard:
